CO2-powered launchers are becoming increasingly popular for personal defense and home security. If you are new to these devices, here is everything you need to know to get started.
How They Work: CO2 launchers use compressed carbon dioxide gas to propel projectiles. A small CO2 cartridge (typically 8g or 12g) is punctured when you prepare the launcher, and the released gas propels projectiles through the barrel. Each cartridge provides enough gas for approximately 15-20 shots, depending on temperature and conditions.
Why CO2? Carbon dioxide is used because it is safe, readily available, inexpensive, and provides consistent propulsion. Unlike firearms, CO2 launchers produce minimal noise (about as loud as a paintball gun), no muzzle flash, and no recoil worth mentioning. This makes them accessible to people who find firearms intimidating.
Types of Projectiles: Most .68 cal launchers can fire several types of projectiles. Chemical rounds (like Byrna Max) burst on impact and release irritant powder. Kinetic rounds are solid and rely on impact energy. Training rounds (like Byrna ECO) are designed for practice.
Safety First: Always treat a CO2 launcher with the same respect as any weapon. Never point it at anything you do not intend to shoot. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire. Store it securely, away from children. Always wear eye protection when practicing.
Legal Status: CO2 launchers are NOT classified as firearms under federal law or Hawaii state law. No permit, registration, or background check is required. However, misuse (such as threatening someone without justification) is still a criminal offense.
Getting Started: We recommend purchasing a launcher kit that includes the launcher, a few CO2 cartridges, and a variety pack of projectiles. Practice with kinetic or training rounds first to get comfortable with the device. Once you are confident in your handling, switch to chemical rounds for self-defense readiness.
Maintenance: CO2 launchers require minimal maintenance. After each use session, remove the CO2 cartridge, clear the barrel, and wipe down the exterior. Store without a cartridge installed. We will cover detailed maintenance in a separate article.
